What I was thinking of in the original question would be analagous to a car's VIN number, how one could in theory check the history of a lens. When it was purchased, whether it has ever been in for repair, reported stolen, that sort of thing. I ran into a situation on ebay where the seller wouldn't provide the serial number and it appears it was a bogus auction. The funny thing was, they said they couldn't provide the serial number, but shot a pic of the lenses top plackard, which clearly showed the serial number;-? Anyway, watch out for ebay spoofs on stuff like this.
